During Session 3 of the 2016 Stand Conference, keynote speaker Dr Peter Adam read two prayers on behalf of the attendees present. Peter Adam has kindly shared these prayers with us below.
A prayer for increasing faith
Lord I believe: help my unbelief and grow my faith. Please send order into my life: send me trials to prove the genuineness of my faith, and to produce perseverance, that I may be single minded, and trust your gospel promises and your gospel plan. Please help me grow in goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. Please make me strong, firm and steadfast in following the Lord Jesus, in every part of my life and ministry. For your glory, and in Christ’s name. Amen.
[Mark 9:24, 1 Peter 1:6-8, James 1:2-8, 2 Peter 1:5-7, 1 Peter 5:10]
A prayer for increasing love.
Lord, please increase my affection, respect and love for your people and your church. Show me how you want me to wash the feet of my fellow believers, and to lay down my life for them. Rid me of apathy, selfishness, neglect, mistreatment, jealousy, resentment, hatred, malice, and condemnation. Clothe me in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Increase my forbearance and forgiveness, just as you forgive me in in Christ. Help me to welcome others, just as Christ has welcomed me, and as Christ has welcomed them. For your glory, and in Christ’s name. Amen.
[2 Peter 1:5-7, John 13:12-17,34, 1 John 3:16, Colossians 3:8-14, Ephesians 5:32, Romans 15:7]
For more details about the practice of writing and reading prepared prayers during personal devotions, Peter has also shared the following:
You can plan or write your own prayers based on passages from the Bible.
Here are two good rules:
- Get into the habit of turning what you read in the Bible into a prayer.
- When you want to pray, think of a Bible passage on which you can base your prayer.
Pray God’s words back to him!
With love in Christ,
